National Trails Day

It’s National Trails Day! Each year on the first Saturday in June, we celebrate National Trails Day! It’s day to volunteer, help promote awareness of the benefit of trails and being outdoors, and to instill excitement for the outdoors. Promoting National Trails and regional trails shows your support for a National Trails System and encourages America’s leadership to conserve the land dedicated to trails.

On top of that, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act, which established National Trails in 1968. The Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail were the first two trails to be established with the act signed into Congress in 1968. This year the American Hiking Society is asking that everyone leave the trail better than you found it . Simple as that - get out and hike, and clean up the trail as you go. Volunteering is all it takes - it’s so difficult to maintain the thousands of miles of your favorite trails across the U.S. based solely on volunteers, so get out and join forces with the trail clubs and give your favorite miles of trail a good cleaning!

While you can give your volunteer time to ANY trail across the country to help out in support of National Trails Day, here is a list of the 11 National Scenic Trails that could really use a helping hand!

List of National Scenic Trails :

  • Appalachian Trail
  • Arizona Trail
  • Continental Divide Trail
  • Florida Trail
  • Ice Age Trail
  • Natchez Trace Trail
  • New England Trail
  • North Country Trail
  • Pacific Crest Trail
  • Pacific Northwest Trail
  • Potomac Heritage Trail

Get out and lend a helping hand to your favorite trail today! Carry a trash bag or an extra zip lock in your pack, and grab all those pieces of trash that end up discarded by others while they hike. Bring some gloves along as well, to make sure you’re safe! As always, don’t forget to bring along sunscreen, wear long pants (those ticks can be a nightmare), and tell someone where you’re going so they know where you’ll be if you’re not back on time!

Trail Tees will be cleaning up a section of the Appalachian Trail in NY today to show our support!

Support the cause by donating to your local trail club - and show spread the word about today by using #NationalTrailsDay #FindYourTrail #PackItOut #LeaveItBetter !

We’ll see you out there!
